ExxonMobil Begins Nigerian Oil Spill Cleanup

About 100 workers are involved in the cleanup after a leak from a pipeline.

Cleanup work has begun following a leak from an ExxonMobil pipeline off the coastline of Nigeria, according to a Bloomberg BusinessWeek report. The pipeline was shut down last Saturday when the spill was discovered.

ExxonMobil is the second-largest oil producer in Nigeria, and it participates in joint venture with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corp., with ExxonMobil holding a 40 percent stake. In 1998, Nigerian National Petroleum was involved in Nigeria's worst oil spill of more than 40,000 barrels.

About 100 workers are engaged in the cleanup of the pipeline spill. Another pipeline in the same region owned by Shell was shut down two weeks ago when it was discovered that thieves were stealing about 25,000 barrels daily from it.
