Bath Salts: It's not a fad... It's a Nightmare

Bath salts are a non-regulated designer drug comprised of a synthetic cathinone, or amphetamine, that can have dangerous and debilitating effects on those who use them. The adverse health effects from bath salt use can range from agitation to lack of appetite, kidney failure, muscle spasms, severe paranoid delusions, and psychosis. Deadly Contract

This U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board video is based on its investigation of the April 8, 2011, explosion and fire that killed five workers at a storage facility used by Donaldson Enterprises near Honolulu, Hawaii. The explosion occurred during the disposal of professional-grade fireworks that had been illegally labeled for consumer use by a Chinese manufacturer and were seized by federal customs agents upon arrival in the United States. The board posted the video Jan. 17, 2012, in conjunction with a public meeting to address the investigative staff's findings about the incident. Friction or a spark probably ignited black powder the workers had removed from the seized fireworks.


BP Alaska: UAV Pilot Testing

In Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, BP conducted pilot testing of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) technology to enhance pipeline inspection and safety. Equipped with high-resolution cameras, the Aeryon Scout provides visual inspections of equipment, helping crews assess and respond to maintenance needs. The small rotor-wing aircraft is flown from a hand-held tablet computer. BP Alaska conducted the trials in cooperation with the University of Alaska Fairbanks in fall 2012.

Put a Freeze on Winter Fires

The United State Fire Administration and National Fire Protection Association are working together in fall 2012 to remind everyone that home fires are more prevalent in winter than in any other season. This is due in part to an increase in cooking and heating fires. Holiday decorations and winter storms that can interrupt electrical service and cause people to turn to alternative heating sources also contribute to the increased risk of fire in winter. Winter fires can be prevented!
